Holiday Valley Events - A Winter Full of Fun on the Slopes
Ellicottville, New York, January 16, 2013 . . . Skiers, snowboarders and people of all ages will have plenty of fun this winter at Holiday Valley. A full schedule of events is planned through the next three months including competitions, parties, contests and entertainment. Here are some of the highlights.
January brings several USASA Snowboarding events including a Parallel Slalom event on January 20th, and two Boardercross events on January 26th and 27th. The Slalom event is a race around gates where two racers go head to head. The Boardercross pits four riders at a time against each other through a course of jumps, banked turns, rollers and gates.
“Harley Days at Holiday Valley” is a Harley Davidson themed weekend, January 26th and 27th, with big bikes on display, on-snow contests and a party with live music from the Bleeding Hearts. A Jumpstart will be set up at the Lodge where people can hop on a real Harley that sits on a trainer and learn how to go through the gears (and make that signature Harley rumble).
February features a freestyle skiing competition on February 2nd and 3rd, a women’s ski clinic with former US Ski Team member Lisa Densmore on February 11th, Boarding for Breast Cancer and the Penguin Paddle. Boarding for Breast Cancer on February 16th is an event to educate about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and early cancer detection, especially in young women. The day consists of snowboard clinics for women, a tribute ride down Mardi Gras, a “Breast Trick” competition in the Rail Park and a fundraising auction that supports the women’s program at Camp Good Days.
The Penguin Paddle on February 23rd benefits Holiday Valley’s Lounsbury Adaptive Program with a huge cookout, an auction and the Penguin Slide. The Penguin Slide has people donning black garbage bags and sliding down the hill on their bellies, penguin style. Kids love the event, but the biggest smiles come from the adults who get to act like kids.
March begins with Telestock on March 1st, a telemark festival with free demos, tele-tips and a cookout. Winter Carnival is scheduled for March 9th and 10th and features parades, events, contests, cookouts and music on the slopes and in the Village of Ellicottville. Perhaps the most memorable event of the Carnival is the Dummy Downhill where guests create dummies on skis or snowboards that slide down the hill, fly over a jump and crash into a wall of snow.
The Gun ‘N Hoses Race on March 16th pits the Holiday Valley snowmaking team against snowmakers from other resorts in the area. The race consists of two snowmakers carrying a hose through a slalom course and then at the finish line they must hook the hose properly to a snowmaking hydrant. The Northwind Super G on March 17th is a chance for all to let ‘er rip down a Super G course on Northwind. A radar gun on the course measures the fastest speed each skier attains. Pond Skimming on March 23rd is the final big event of the year where skiers and snowboarders go down the hill and attempt to skim across an ice water filled pond. Bonus points are awarded for creative costumes and big splashes. This day also features a cardboard box race where people build creative boxes and slide in them down the hill.
The season is scheduled to end on April 7th, with a very short break until golf season begins.
