Holiday Valley Rocks All Summer Long
Ellicottville, New York, June 4, 2014 . . . Summer is gearing up at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville and many activities and events are planned for the season. The pool complex and the Mountain Coaster opened over this past Memorial Day weekend and the Sky High Adventure Park offered extended hours. Annual events like the Mudslide Obstacle Trail Run and the Ellicottville Summer Festival of the Arts will take place over the next few months. The resort’s Double Black Diamond 6500 yard, par 70 golf course is open and in good condition. The three-pool swim complex has something for everyone . . . a lap pool, a toddler pool and an activity pool as well as poolside service from the Cabana Bar and John Harvard’s and fun games to play on the deck. The pools are open weekends from 11a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 15th. From June 20th through September 7th the pools are open daily.
Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley is a great destination for active outdoor families. The Aerial Park is a playground in the trees featuring a series of platforms and bridges that require strategy and balance, and a bit of courage. One new black level course has been added this year, the "Black Widow" for a total of 13 courses that range from the low level “yellows” to the very challenging and high “double black”. The Sky High Mountain Coaster is a thrilling ride that twists, turns and spirals down the mountain through the woods where the rider controls the speed of the car. In the Climbing Forest at Sky High guests can scramble up trees that are fitted with climbing holds and safety harnesses. Climbers can choose their level of challenge from the easier yellows through the toughest blacks.
The Double Black Diamond Golf Course provides challenging golf in a beautiful setting of trees, rolling hills and ponds. The relatively level front nine plays long and is built around a series of ponds and bunkers. The back nine winds its way through the base of the mountain providing spectacular views and a very stern test of golf. The greens are carefully manicured to provide a fast and true putting surface.
The third annual Mudslide Obstacle Race on June 14th has plenty of good, clean muddy fun. Competitors can choose from the easier 3.5 mile course or the more difficult 5.4 mile course. All runners start at the top of the ski slopes (chairlift ride provided), then run across the ridgeline of the resort and down the slopes, while navigating eight obstacles. The longer course adds a significant amount of uphill running aided by ropes in the steepest sections. Further information and registration is at www.holidayvalley.com/mudslide.
The Summer Festival of the Arts, July 4 to 6, features the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and a spectacular fireworks show on Saturday and jangle pop innovators, the Gin Blossoms on Sunday. Both concerts take place on the slopes at Holiday Valley. The Village of Ellicottville hosts an Arts and Crafts exhibit, the annual Pet Parade and Strawberry Shortcake social in the town square. Summer Festival is a wonderful weekend for the whole family. Ticket information and schedule can be found at www.holidayvalley.com/summerfest.
The International Bowhunters World Championships will be held at Holiday Valley August 7-10. The event will attract more than 2,000 contestants and their families from more than 20 countries to compete for the world championships and $200,000 in cash and prizes. Twenty-four "ranges" are created throughout the woods and along the ski trails at Holiday Valley and over 400 3D targets are set in these ranges, approximately 20 targets per range. The life size targets represent native species like white tail deer, black bear and turkey and some very exotic species like mountain goats and buffalo. Teams of 4 or 5 shooters are assigned a set of 3 ranges each day where they fire from a designated spot at the targets. The closer their arrow comes to the "kill zone" of the target, the higher the score. The Holiday Valley Bowhunters Open allows non-qualified shooters compete on the same courses as the world qualifiers.
